President Turk was quoted on KPCC’s “Take Two” radio program about why it matters what term is used to describe the so-called “Islamic State.” The southern California program is hosted by Alex Cohen and A Martínez. In his remarks, Turk stressed that the term Daesh is considered preferable as a way to delegitimize the organization. This terms takes away the claims to “Islamic”-ness stressed by the group, and it also carries a negative connotation of having been defeated. The group itself does not like to be referred as Daesh, although many native Arabic speakers use it as the most appropriate reference for it.
